enemy attack at Da Nang airfield information

For date 650701

Quang Nam Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Da Nang
Description: Taking advantage of the fact that the area south of the perimeter fence was the responsibility of the South Vietnamese forces, the VC sent a 85-man mortar and recoilless rifle force reinforced by North Vietnamese sappers into the airfield. They had planned and rehearsed this operation for over a month. The USAF side of the base received this attack. Two C-130's and a F-102 were destroyed while two F-102's and another C-130 were damaged. This attack resulted in significantly more aggressive patrolling and Marine responsibility for the areas retained by the South Vietnamese.
