More detail on this person: John Wilson Brake, son of Hobert and Corinne Brake, was born in Sioux City, Iowa February 22, 1928. He was a graduate of Morningside College, Morningside, Iowa and attended the University of Iowa Law School and the Graduate School. John (Jack) married Janice Lind of Davenport, Iowa in 1951. The couple had two sons, Steven (deceased) and David (Girard, KS). John and Jan lived in Iowa the first year of their marriage as he was completing the second year of an Army ROTC program. Upon completion of the program he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. John had previously entered service with the military at the age of 17 as a Private in the Marine Corps. John served fifteen months fighting in the Korean conflict on the ground. Sometime later he attended Army Fixed Wing and Helicopter schools and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He was then stationed at Fort Leavenworth until he retired in 1977 as a Master Aviator. He then worked 25 years in the construction industry. He retired from J.E. Dunn Construction as an Executive Vice-President. John was inducted into the Society of American Military Engineers Academy of Fellows in 2007. In his younger years John played competitive handball and tennis. He was a Midwest AAU Handball Champion. He lived in Overland Park for over 40 years and was a longtime member of the Overland Park Planning Commission. After retirement he and Jan traveled extensively. John served on the board of the Faith Lutheran Church and was a member of The Quiet Birdman. He was known for his drive, work ethic, and loyalty. His family was very important to John and he is survived by his wife of 66 years Janice and one son, David Brake (Mary), Girard, Kansas
