More detail on this person: William R. Hensley Army Colonel, Loan Officer William R. Hensley, 67, a decorated Army colonel who commanded an assault helicopter company during the Vietnam War, died of lung cancer March 9 at his home in Fairfax. After he retired in 1986, he was a mortgage loan officer at Guild Mortgage and Briner Inc. Col. Hensley was born in Harlan, Ky. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and received a master's degree in public administration from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. He also graduated from the Army War College and the Command and General Staff College. Col. Hensley served in the Army for 30 years. He was military attache to Laos in the mid-1960s and Army NATO delegate in the mid-1970s. His honors included the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of Fairfax United Methodist Church, the Association of the United States Army and the Order of the Daedalians military aviation association. His marriage to Ann Hensley ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Joan B. Hensley of Fairfax; two daughters from his first marriage, Joan Toma of Bloomington, Ind., and Sharon Giareatana of Kennesaw, Ga.; four children from his second marriage, Army Maj. Karen D.H. Tomlin of Orlando, Elizabeth H. Martin of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Army Maj. William R. Hensley Jr. of Fort Sill, Okla., and Army Capt. Robert B. Hensley of Fort Stewart, Ga.; his parents, Roy Hensley and Beaulah Hensley, both of Lexington, Ky.; a sister; and nine grandchildren
