The 9 Squadron unit history states that Flt Lt E "Lofty" Lance was the captain of Iroquois A2-723 which was shot down while conducting a resupply mission for Australian troops during Operation OVERLORD. Two of the crew escaped but the captain and gunner, Cpol Dave Dubber, perished. Lance, a South African, was a well known RAAF personality who, in a long flying career had flown with the South African Air Force and later still with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force. He had joined the RAAF in 1968.
