C/2/20 ARA was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Binh Dinh Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, LZ BIRD
Description: The battalion history states that at 0105H, the 18th NVA Regt attacked LZ BYRD. Battery A responded to the call for fire and in spite of extremely marginal weather were delivering withering rocket fire on the attacking enemy by 0135H. The first section was soon joined by additional aircraft from Batteries A and C. Aircraft rotated on station until the attack had been repelled and the enemy force destroyed. According to elements on LZ BYRD, the ARA fire was the primary factor for turning the force attacking the east side of the LZ. The initial enemy fire was a mixture of heavy enemy machine guns and captured M-60s, and hit the first two ships to arrive. Both completed their mission, however, and returned home under their own power.
