Operation SAM HOUSTON
Pleiku Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Description: This operation was a continuation of border surveillance operations in Pleiku and Kontum Provinces by 4th Inf Div with the 3d Bde, 25th Inf Div. It would be followed by FRANCIS MARION and claimed 733 known enemy casualties versus 169 US KIAs. Initially the 4th had only its 2d Bde and the 3d Bde, 25th but during February the 1st Bde, 4th Inf joined from Tuy Hoa to round out the division. This operation consisted of a series of aggressive search and destroy missions especially in southwestern Kontum Province. In mid-February the division had no less than eleven major engagements with the NVA. By March the NVA had had enough and began retreating back into Cambodia.
