Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 9 Mar 1968 issue. A reconnaissance patrol from the 5th SF "A" Det at Thuong Duc engaged 12 VC recently, the two U.S. soldiers and 30 Camp Strike Force soldiers engaged in a brief firefight and the enemy withdrew. Five enemy were killed in the engagement. Also, Green Beret troopers from the 'A' Det at Ba To conducted a search and destroy mission near their camp. While on the mission, the soldiers made contact with a VC platoon, resulting in 10 VC killed. The missions continued and the SF soldiers destroyed 30 military structures. Later, air estimated enemy company attacked a convoy and security force that was moving to Thuong Duc. Heavy fighting erupted and a reaction force of SF troopers and a Vietnamese Marine unit were deployed as reinforcements. A sweep was made after the enemy broke contact and 24 enemy bodies were found. In a joint effort, several Army Support Command maintenance units at Cam Ranh repaired 33 five-ton tractors and returned them to service in a 24-hour period. MAJ Kenneth M. Martin, the Cam Ranh Bay Support Command Director of Maintenance, stated that the record of 33 "five-tons" returned to services surpassed the average returned in one day by 55 per cent. Participating in the joint project were the 69th MNT Bn and the 36th TC Bn.
