Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 13 Jan 1969 issue.
Ninth Infantry Division soldiers killed 107 enemy in heavy fighting during the past week. Infantrymen from the 9th Div and supporting elements reported killing 33 VC in scattered actions on Dec 28. The 2d Bde's Mobile Riverine Force and supporting elements reported killing a total of 19 enemy as gunship crews from the 214th CAB, 162d AHC reported killing eight VC hiding in palm trees 10 miles southeast of Dong Tam. Five more VC were killed by chopper gunners from D/3/5th Air Cav in scattered actions in Kien Hoa Province.
After being air-inserted into an area 12 miles south of Dong Tam, elements of the 3/60th Inf killed four VC, while tactical airstrikes accounted for two VC killed 16 miles south of Dong Tam.
A patrol from the 3d Bde observed and engaged an estimated VC squad 12 miles east of Tan An. Gunship crews from the 9th Avn Bn supported the action in which five enemy were killed. Other soldiers killed three enemy in scattered contacts.
In the 1st Bde action, a division recon patrol killed three VC in an encounter with five enemy seven miles northeast of Cai Lay. Elements of the 2/39th Inf engaged an estimated squad-size enemy force nine miles west of Cai Be. Two VC bodies were found following the battle. Other battalion elements killed two VC in separate incidents.
