Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 13 Jan 1969 issue. Soldiers of the 1st Cav Div and supporting elements killed a total of 198 enemy troops in a week of heavy contact. In action near Quan Loi Dec 24, elements of the 1/9th Air Cav received an estimated 75 rounds of automatic weapons fire. Airstrikes were called in to support the air cavalrymen. A search of the area revealed the bodies of seven NVA soldiers. Thirteen miles northeast of Tay Ninh City, elements of the 2/8th Cav observed six NVA soldiers moving in a southwesterly direction. The infantrymen engaged the enemy, killing two before the others disappeared into the underbrush. One other NVA soldiers was killed 15 miles northeast of Tay Ninh City. On the evening of Dec 25, following the end of the Christmas truce, gunship crews spotted three enemy in an area 42 miles northwest of Phuoc Vinh. The engaged the enemy, killing one.
