Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2 No. 252 Friday December 27. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Americal Division forces reported killing two NVA and 25 VC, discovering the bodies of two VC and two NVA, detaining 21 VC suspects and capturing seven weapons as action picked up yesterday following the Christmas standdown in southern I Corps. Action was heaviest in the 196th Inf. Bdee. area where infantry, cavalry, and Mobile Strike Force units killed one NVA and 15 VC and discovered two VC bodies. Elements of the 1-46 Inf. and 4-31 Inf. accounted for nine VC dead in two incidents west of Tam Ky. An NVA doctor and his nurse were detained by Co. C, 4-31 Inf. in the same general area, and the doctor indicated that his aid station had been destroyed previously. In a pack he carried penicillin and documents. Recon elements of the 3-21 Inf. killed two VC in separate incidents near Thang Binh, and soldiers at an observation post of the 2-1 Inf. killed one VC about 100 meters from the base. F Trp., 8th Cav., working part of the day in the 196th area, killed two VC in mid-morning action near Tien Phuoc. F Trp., 17th Cav. discovered two VC bodies, apparently dead several days. Mobile Strike Force 14 killed one NVA 12 miles west of Que Son in the morning and killed a VC by calling in artillery support nearer Que Son in the afternoon. One NVA and two VC were killed, two NVA bodies were discovered, 17 VC suspects detained, and seven individual weapons captured in the 11th Inf. Bde. area. Co. D, 4-21 Inf. found two NVA soldiers in graves among three huts near a stream 20 miles west of Duc Pho. Near the same site later, Co. D found and destroyed 16 huts, livestock, and 300 pounds of rice. One secondary explosion occurred as the supplies were destroyed. Co. B, 4-21 Inf. killed one VC near a stream 21 miles west of Duc Pho, and Co. D, 3-1 Inf. killed a fleeing NVA in a green uniform 10 miles southwest of Quang Ngai City. Both companies retrieved the dead soldiers' AK-47 rifles. Elements of the 11th's aviation section killed two VC west of Que Son. Other weapons captured included tow K-44 rifles and a shotgun by Co. A, 1-20 Inf. and an M-1 rifle and shotgun by Co. C, 4-21 Inf. C Co. also found an enemy base camp of 10 huts, including a mess hall, and two bundles of punji sticks, two AM radios, two tons of rice and six pounds of explosives. Three large groups of VC suspects were detained in the Duc Pho area. To the south, Co. B, 4-3 Inf. halted seven VC suspects, and Co. D, 4-3 Inf. stopped five without ID cards. To the northwest near railroad trucks, Co. C, 1-20 Inf. detained five VC suspects who tried to flee from U.S. troops. Air power accounted for the deaths of four VC in the 198th Inf. Bde. area as "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bnn. and FAC recon aircraft killed two VC near Binh Son and Tien Phuoc. The "Aero Scouts" engaged and killed the VC while flying a visual recon mission in support of 198th troops southwest of Binh Son about noon. Air strikes by the recon aircraft against three sampans killed two VC southwest of Tien Phuoc late in the afternoon. VC suspects were detained by Co. C, 5-46 Inf., led by 1LT James J. Frazier (Decatur, IL), and Co. C, 1-52 Inf., led by CPT Archibald L.J. Hall (San Antonio, TX). Each halted two in the Chu Lai and Oregon areas. The 1-52 infantrymen caught their suspects after one threw a Chicom hand greande at them. In civic action programs last week, 198th soldiers treated 2239 Vietnamese during medical assistance visits and distributed a half ton of clothing to the villagers. "Brave and Bold" troops also contributed to Christmas festivities at the Vietnamese Catholic orphanage north of Chu Lai. In the 1st Sqdn., 1st Cav. and Oregon areas, the busy F Troopers of the 8th Cav. upped their day's body count to six VC by killing four more in incidents near Que Son and Tam Ky. One kill came in Operation Hardin Falls and one in the Oregon Area. One Americal Division soldier was killed and three wounded and evacuated for medical treatment, according to an initial report.
