Description: 15Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 22-27 Page 2 173rd Abn Bde An element of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, while in a defensive position eight miles south-southwest of Bong Son in Binh Dinh Province of Military Region 2, received fewer than five rounds of 60mm mortar fire resulting in light casualties and no materiel damage during the evening of Feb. 22. To the south in Phu Bon Province of the same region, an element of the 173rd discovered and enemy rice cache, weighing 2.5 tons, 28 miles north of Cheo Reo, on Feb. 26. Three hours later, the same unit engaged an estimated 15 enemy 25 miles north of Cheo Reo. Six enemy were killed and two individual were captured in the five-minute contact. There were no friendly casualties. In Binh Dinh Province on the afternoon of the same day, an element of the 173rd, while in a defensive position eight miles south of Bong Son, received fewer than 5 rounds of 82mm mortar fire resulting in light casualties and no materiel damage. That evening in the same province, an element of the 173rd engaged an undetermined-size force 21 miles southwest of An Khe and killed five. One U.S. soldier was wounded.
